Two people were killed Thursday afternoon after a federal law enforcement operation in Nashville turned deadly when agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) came under gunfire, authorities said.
The incident unfolded at approximately 1:11 p.m. in the 2801 block of Landers Avenue, the location of Thompson Lane Self Storage in Nashville’s Woodbine neighborhood. The large law enforcement response drew numerous federal, state, and local agencies to the scene as investigators worked to secure the area and determine the sequence of events.
According to the ATF, federal agents were conducting an enforcement action related to alleged violations of federal firearms laws when they were fired upon. Agents returned fire during the encounter.
Metro Nashville Police Public Affairs Director Don Aaron said during a press briefing that two people died as a result of the incident. One individual who exchanged gunfire with ATF agents was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second person was transported to a nearby hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified either of the deceased pending notification of their next of kin.
Officials emphasized that Metro Nashville police officers did not discharge their weapons during the incident. While local officers responded to assist in securing the area and managing the aftermath, Aaron confirmed that the exchange of gunfire involved federal agents.
Following the shooting, the ATF announced that the scene had been secured and reassured residents that there was no ongoing threat to the public. Investigators established a perimeter around the storage facility as crime scene personnel documented evidence and interviewed witnesses.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is expected to provide additional information as the investigation progresses. Authorities will examine evidence from the scene, review witness statements, and reconstruct the events leading up to the fatal confrontation as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The incident temporarily disrupted activity in the Woodbine neighborhood as emergency responders, investigators, and law enforcement personnel remained at the scene throughout the afternoon.
