The Doral Police Department and the South Florida law enforcement community are mourning the loss of Officer Edwin Fernandez, who was found dead Wednesday morning in southwest Miami-Dade. Authorities said his death is being investigated as an apparent suicide.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 6:30 a.m. to the area of Southwest 157th Avenue and Southwest 160th Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive officer. Upon arrival, deputies located Officer Fernandez deceased. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
Officer Fernandez had proudly served with the Doral Police Department since 2013, dedicating more than a decade to protecting and serving the residents of Doral. During his years of service, he earned the respect of fellow officers and members of the community through his professionalism, commitment, and dedication to public safety.
In a statement released following his death, the Doral Police Department expressed profound sadness over the loss of their colleague and extended gratitude to neighboring law enforcement agencies, first responders, and community members for their support during this difficult time.
The department also honored Fernandez’s years of service, noting that his legacy would continue through the lives of those who had the privilege of serving alongside him. Colleagues described the loss as deeply felt throughout the agency, where Officer Fernandez was regarded as a valued member of the department.
Following the initial death investigation, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue ambulance carrying Officer Fernandez was escorted by law enforcement officers to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office. The solemn procession served as a tribute to his years of dedicated service in uniform.
Roads surrounding the area were temporarily closed as investigators documented the scene and emergency personnel carried out their work. Authorities have not released additional information regarding the investigation.
News of Officer Fernandez’s passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from fellow officers, local officials, and community members, many of whom have expressed gratitude for his years of service and extended their sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.
